Knee Conditions & Treatments

Many knee conditions develop gradually over time. What may begin as occasional discomfort during exercise or stiffness after activity can slowly progress to ongoing pain, swelling or difficulty with movement. Other knee problems occur suddenly following a sporting injury, fall or accident.

Because the knee is responsible for supporting body weight and absorbing forces during movement, even relatively minor injuries can have a significant impact on daily life. Activities such as walking, climbing stairs, exercising and participating in sport often become more difficult when the knee is not functioning normally.

Mr Soong Chua specialises in the diagnosis and treatment of a range of knee conditions, including ACL injuries, knee arthritis and meniscus tears. This page provides an overview of common knee conditions, treatment options and knee procedures performed by Mr Soong Chua.

Understanding the Knee

The knee is the largest joint in the body and plays an important role in movement and stability. Every day, the knee is subjected to significant forces during activities such as walking, running, squatting and climbing stairs.

The joint is formed by the femur (thigh bone), tibia (shin bone) and patella (kneecap). These bones work together with cartilage, ligaments, tendons and the menisci to provide stability, absorb shock and allow smooth movement.

Because the knee is used so frequently, it is vulnerable to both injury and age-related wear and tear. Problems affecting these structures can lead to pain, swelling, stiffness, instability and reduced function.

Knee Conditions We Treat

Below are some of the most common knee conditions treated by Mr Soong Chua. Each condition affects the knee differently and may require a different treatment approach.

Arthritis of the knee occurs when the cartilage that cushions the joint gradually wears away. This can lead to pain, stiffness, swelling and difficulty with everyday activities such as walking, climbing stairs and exercising.
The meniscus is a piece of cartilage that acts as a shock absorber within the knee. Tears can occur following a twisting injury or develop gradually over time, causing pain, swelling and symptoms such as catching or locking of the joint.
The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is a key stabilising ligament of the knee that is commonly injured during sport. While Mr Soong Chua no longer performs ACL reconstruction surgery, he can refer patients to one of the experienced ACL surgeons at OrthoSport Victoria (OSV) when required.

Knee Surgery We Perform

Many knee conditions can be successfully managed without surgery. However, surgery may be recommended when symptoms persist or function remains significantly affected.

Robotic knee replacement uses computer-assisted planning and robotic technology to assist with implant positioning during knee replacement surgery.
Meniscus surgery is performed arthroscopically through small incisions using a miniature camera and specialised instruments. Depending on the type and location of the tear, the damaged meniscus is either repaired with stitches or the torn tissue is carefully trimmed away.
Knee arthroscopy is a minimally invasive procedure that uses a small camera and specialised instruments to diagnose and treat a variety of knee conditions through small incisions.
