Elbow Conditions & Treatments

Although often overlooked, the elbow plays an important role in many everyday activities. Simple tasks such as lifting, carrying, gripping and reaching all rely on the elbow functioning normally. When pain or injury develops, even routine activities can become difficult.

Elbow conditions may develop gradually through repetitive use or occur suddenly following an injury. Symptoms can range from pain and weakness to stiffness and reduced movement, depending on the underlying cause.

Mr Soong Chua specialises in the diagnosis and treatment of a range of elbow conditions, including distal biceps tendon tears, golfer’s elbow and tennis elbow. This page provides an overview of common elbow conditions, treatment options and elbow procedures performed by Mr Soong Chua.

Understanding The Elbow

The elbow is a complex joint formed by three bones: the humerus, radius and ulna. Together, these bones allow the arm to bend, straighten and rotate.

The elbow also relies on healthy tendons, ligaments and muscles to function normally. Repetitive movements, sporting activities and injuries can all contribute to elbow pain and dysfunction.

Problems affecting these structures may cause pain, weakness, stiffness, reduced movement and difficulty performing everyday tasks.

Elbow Conditions We Treat

Below are some of the most common elbow conditions treated by Mr Soong Chua. Each condition affects the elbow differently and may require a different treatment approach.

A distal biceps tendon tear occurs when the tendon connecting the biceps muscle to the elbow becomes partially or completely detached. This injury can cause pain, weakness and difficulty lifting or rotating the forearm.
Tennis elbow is a common condition affecting the tendons on the outside of the elbow. It often develops through repetitive use and can cause pain during gripping, lifting and everyday activities.
Golfer's elbow affects the tendons on the inside of the elbow and commonly causes pain during gripping, lifting and wrist movements. Although often associated with golf, it can affect anyone who performs repetitive arm or hand activities.

Elbow Surgery We Perform

Many elbow conditions can be successfully managed without surgery. However, surgery may be recommended when symptoms persist or function remains significantly affected

Distal biceps tendon repair involves reattaching a torn biceps tendon to the elbow. The procedure is performed to restore strength, function and movement following a distal biceps tendon rupture.
Tennis elbow surgery involves removing or repairing damaged tendon tissue on the outside of the elbow. It is performed to relieve pain and restore function when non-surgical treatments have not been successful.
Radial head replacement involves replacing the damaged head of the radius bone with a prosthetic implant. It is performed to restore elbow stability, relieve pain and improve movement following severe fractures or joint damage.
